Ask ten Pakistani car owners which used sedan to buy and you will start a debate that has been running since the 1990s: Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic? Both are assembled locally, both hold their value, and both have a loyal following. But they suit different buyers. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose the right used sedan for your budget and your driving.

Generations you will find on the used market

Toyota Corolla: the 10th generation (2009–2014, "Corolla XLi/GLi/Altis"), the 11th generation (2014–2020, the popular Altis Grande and the 1.3 GLi/XLi) and the current 12th-generation facelifts from 2020 onward. Local variants range from the basic 1.3 XLi to the Altis Grande 1.8 with cruise control and a sunroof.

Honda Civic: the 8th generation "Reborn" (2006–2012), the 9th generation "Rebirth" (2012–2016), the 10th generation "Turbo/X" (2016–2022) and the 11th generation launched in 2022. Local variants include the 1.8 i-VTEC, the 1.5 Turbo (RS) and, on older cars, the 1.6 and 2.0 Oriel.

Price and resale value

This is where the Corolla wins. Because Toyota sells more units and the market trusts it, a Corolla loses less value every year and sells faster when you decide to move on. The Corolla caught up with the Altis Grande, and 2020+ Corollas added Toyota Safety Sense on top variants. Check exactly which trim you are buying: an XLi and an Altis Grande are very different cars under the same badge.

Which one should you buy?

• Buy a Corolla if you want the lowest running cost, the best resale, a comfortable ride for the family, or you drive mostly in the city on rough roads. The 1.6 Altis automatic (2015–2019) is the sweet spot for most buyers.
• Buy a Civic if you enjoy driving, spend time on the motorway, want more features and style for the money, and can budget a little more for parts. The 2017–2020 Civic 1.8 i-VTEC is the sensible pick; the 1.5 Turbo is for enthusiasts.
